Review: Against All Odds by Nancy Hopper

Against All Odds by Nancy Hopper
                              Amazon
Synopsis: Andrea is a young registered nurse, who finds herself attracted to two men at once. The first is a rich, reckless man to whom she desperately wants to belong. The other is a mysterious, handsome man who frightens her, but wants her heart at all cost. Her relationships with these men take Andrea on a journey that challenges her view of herself and her core beliefs about life and love.
Anna's Review:
This was the second book that I have read by Nancy Hopper and I have to say I really liked this book as well. I never knew what to expect from the characters. I always enjoy not being able to guess everything that is not going to happen in the story of a book.

First off, when I really started to get into this book and Andrea's relationships, I really got angry with Andrea. I hate to say but it took me awhile to figure out that there was probably something underneath it all. ;)

Anyways, this love story literally starts off as love at first sight...well for the man anyway. Sandy Shaner is sitting in a hospital cafeteria when he first sees Andrea Michaelson. He immediately likes her. Later, they will end up on the elevator together. However, Andrea finds him to be intimidating.

Their "relationship", if you can call it that, definitely has its hardships. Andrea is fearful of Sandy. But, here is where my irritation comes into play, she is willing to date Shane's motorcycle competition. Ugh :( He is truly a low life.

It seems like Andrea and Sandy will never get together. I feel bad for them because they have so many obstacles to overcome from Andrea's loser boyfriend to her fear of Sandy to her dark secret to lies told in jealousy and for betrayal. There's alot happening in this story.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It kept me on my toes and had some of my emotions come out.  I would recommend it to everyone.

Review: My Heart Won't Say Goodbye by Nancy Hopper

My Heart Won't Say Goodbye by Nancy Hopper
                      Amazon
Synopsis: Crista is a young Country Music entertainer, thrilled to be on her way up the music charts. She returns to her small home town to reforge relationships with family members and friends, as well as to face some painful memories. She incidentally finds a man who won't accept her explanation that music and romance don't mix. She has to decide how much risk she is willing to take, and whether she can deal with the complications that result. She leaves to go on tour and watch the details of her personal life play out publicly when the press gets wind of her new interest. When it all appears to be going the way she feared, can she cope?

Anna's Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book. Hopper really kept me on my toes. I kept telling myself what was going to happen when .... BAM.... nope that is not what is going to happen. I love when I guess wrong :)

Crista is a Country Music star who decides to return to what she knows as home. She has been gone for ten years and now wants to see it. This is where she will meet Mr. Dream himself, Campbell James. But, with any good story, you know that there is bound to be "trouble in paradise".

These two go through so many obstacles.. it made my head spin. I was so shocked. I felt so bad for them. Every time their relationship was doing good someone would either lie or their pasts would come back to haunt them.

Even with these hardships their relationship lasted and it was heartwarming to read. It showed just how much they loved each.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it to everyone.

Digitus 233 by K.D. Emerson
 Amazon ON SALE $1.99

Digitus, the world’s dominant corporation, has studied human nature for centuries. They are experts who expand on a human’s natural gifts and talents to create supreme world leaders in all major areas of science, art, religion, music and leadership. A select few young adults are handpicked each year to join the elite.
As a final test of induction into Digitus, Zander’s team finds themselves ejected from a Learjet and land on a barren arctic island. They come together in an effort to survive and escape. Unfortunately, escape is short-lived when a nuclear powered, ballistic missile submarine rescues them, and a computer malfunction threatens an all-out nuclear attack on North America.
Time is running out as Zander’s brother Zeph struggles to uncover the truth behind the corrupt organization that holds the future of the world in its grasp.
Tick Tock.

Book Excerpt from Digitus 233 by K.D. Emerson
Transfixed in place, Zeph watched as four teenagers shot out into space and then one more time the door in the ceiling opened. He recognized his brother Zander as the airplane seat came through the opening and then propelled out into the blue and white sky. Whoa, how crazy is that? The Fantastic Four and my older brother just shot out of a perfectly good Learjet. In shock, Zeph stood staring numbly at the floor of the tube. Wait! That’s not normal! He slammed his hands against the tube and then froze in place; his mind whirled in panic. What kind of crazy camp was this? He understood survival camps, but this was nuts.
His heart thumped madly in his chest, pumping blood to his throbbing head. I have to do something! He forced himself to think. Those seats had to have parachutes. Obviously they weren’t killing those kids… were they?

Cover Reveal: Flame by Mari Arden

Today I have the privilege of revealing the cover of Mari Arden's book, Flame.

I think it's gorgeous and I'm anxious to hear what you think too!

First here is the blurb for Flame..
Some secrets change your life forever.

Have you ever felt invisible? I do. Everyday. I can't get close to anyone, and people can't get close to me. Everytime I feel a friendship beginning, something inevitably happens, and I become invisible again. Unseen. Ignored. It's been a part of me for so long that it's hard to imagine anything different.

Then the Saguinox arrive, and my life is forever altered. People are fascinated by these beautiful creatures who look and talk like us. They're alluring. Seductive. Intoxicating. And two of them are going to my school. Rhys is everything I shouldn't want, but his eyes are like something from a memory. I can't help but be intrigued. He's the only one who can really see me.

Some secrets you're better off not knowing.

I had been found on a cold winter night with nothing but a blanket, and ashes covering my skin. My mother saved me from death, and took me in with love. But she couldn't save herself. I didn't think heroes were real anymore until the day Kaiden saved me. I couldn't believe in miracles until the day he revealed I was the miracle they had all been hoping for. Deep inside I always knew my past mattered.

I just didn't know my life would depend on it.

Now for the beautiful cover!

Ready?

Drum Roll Please...

Yeah I told you it was gorgeous!

Flawed Blog Tour: Guest Post & Giveaway

I'm really excited about this tour.  It's for Kate Avelynn's Flawed and today I have a guest post that she wrote on Balancing Romance in Dark YA.  She gives a lot of great insight on the topic!  I found it really interesting and I think you will too.  So without further introduction here's the kick-ace guest post!

So glad to be here today, Tess! Lots of authors want to know how to balance romance with the darker elements inherent in gritty YA. Honestly, I think this will depend on the specific author and how much emphasis they want to put on romance vs. the darkness they’re trying to create, as well as what purpose the romance will serve in the story. For some authors, the dark elements are part of the romance (a boyfriend who abuses his girlfriend, for example), while others go the route I did (the romantic interest supports the abused character while they break free). The key, in my opinion, is to know exactly what purpose your romantic interest serves in the story, and incorporate him or her from there.

I went into FLAWED knowing it would be too dark to appeal to anyone if Sarah didn’t have something to hope for—something that made her want to step out into the world and try something new. A story doesn’t begin until there’s a trigger for change, and in Sarah’s case, that trigger was finally catching the eye of the boy she’s wanted forever. Sam.

That decided, I looked at what Sarah needed from Sam. She’s been trapped (in her house, in her restrictive clothing, in her life) for so long, he had to be her escape. She needed to experience real love so she understood the difference between what she had with her brother and what love is supposed to feel like.  She needed to be with someone who would challenge her.

I took all these things and looked at the story. Sarah exists in three worlds: one in which her father has all the control, one in which James has all the control, and one in which she’s alone, usually hiding in her room. Romance only fits into that last world, so I knew that’s where Sam would be. He dragged that third world out of her bedroom and opened up her life to new possibilities. Any firsts she needed to experience, he was there. Any time she needed support or a kick in the pants to make a change, he was there. And whenever she needed to lose herself in warm arms and hot kisses, he was there.

Could I have taken this book a different direction? Definitely. In fact, several editors asked that I take out the romance and focus on Sarah’s emotional awakening. Others asked that I take out most of the darkness and focus on the romance. In the end, neither direction fit my vision for the book, so I went with the balance that felt right. I hope readers enjoy FLAWED’s balance between darkness and romance!

About the Author:
Kate Avelynn lives in Central Oregon with her husband, whom she fell in love with at eighteen after realizing he shared her obsession with music, sports, and psychoanalysis. When not devouring books, holding down her editing gig, or attempting to coax life out of the weed patch she calls a “garden,” Kate writes dark, young adult romance that blends first love, betrayal, and danger. FLAWED is her debut novel.

FLAWED by Kate Avelynn
Amazon | B&N | The Book DepositoryGoodreadsWebsite
Sarah O’Brien is alive because of the pact she and her brother made twelve years ago—James will protect her from their violent father if she promises to never leave him. For years, she’s watched James destroy his life to save hers. If all he asks for in return is her affection, she’ll give it freely.

Until, with a tiny kiss and a broken mind, he asks for more than she can give.

Sam Donavon has been James’s best friend—and the boy Sarah’s had a crush on—for as long as she can remember. As their forbidden relationship deepens, Sarah knows she’s in trouble. Quiet, serious Sam has decided he’s going to save her. Neither of them realize James is far more unstable than her father ever was, or that he’s not about to let Sarah forget her half of the pact…

And now for the prizes! Kate is giving away a FLAWED swag pack (dog tag, tattoos, guitar pick, magnets) to one lucky commenter. All you have to do is leave a comment recommending YA books you’ve read that do a good job of balancing the romance with darkness, along with your email address. Today’s giveaway is only open to US residents, but keep an eye out for International giveaways scheduled throughout the tour.

Life Makes Delay

Just a little update...
Sorry posts haven't gone up in the last day or two.  I got sick last week and I have been off of blogger all together.  I'm working on getting caught back up so I can start scheduling posts again.
This also means that if you sent me an email that I'm just now getting to it.  Give me a few days and if you still haven't heard back then it's gotten lost.  Please shoot me another email if you don't get a reply in the next day or two because then that means your email got lost.  This shouldn't happen but just a heads up if it does!
I'm also getting back to my review books!  Just an FYI. Reviews and such will resume soon!

On an exciting note, my co-bloggers are starting to get the hang of things and you will be hearing more from them! Especially Anna because she is a lightning reader.  This is really exciting for me because I really want to feature as many authors as we can but it's impossible for me to do as much as I want to do by myself.  (wow that sentence was nice and wordy)

I need some opinions/suggestions.
I really want to revamp my Facebook blog page and get some more likes on there.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could do this?
If you haven't liked my page yet, I would be very grateful if you did!

Thanks y'all! I hope you have a great rest of your Wednesday!

Review Going Under by Georgia Cates

Hi everyone, this is officially my first ever blog post, and I am beyond excited to share my opinion with you guys. It has been long overdue, since I finished reading this novel almost TWO MONTHS AGO!!! Thank you so much Tess for allowing me to be a part of your incredible blog. Hopefully, this will be my first of many in the near future. God Bless. :)
Going Under by Georgia Cates
 Goodreads | Amazon
Jessie Boone is a self proclaimed bad boy and doesn’t march to the beat of anyone’s drum, but his own. Growing up in less than desirable circumstances has made him no stranger to the hard knock life and his determination to leave it behind is fierce. When he finds himself transferred to East Franklin High School, he sees his opportunity to use his athletic ability to snag a college football scholarship, but Forbes Henderson, the player Jessie means to replace isn’t giving up his spot willingly. In fact, Forbes is willing to go to extreme measures to retain his place as first string quarterback. When Forbes’ malicious plan to injure his replacement fails, Jessie is furious and determined to show him he messed with the wrong person; not only is he going to take the position of first string quarterback, he’s going to take his girl, too.

Claire Deveraux is perfection at it’s best. She is beautiful, intelligent and unaware she just became Jessie Boone’s conquest as revenge against her boyfriend, Forbes Henderson. Like her flawless performance as the perfect daughter and student, Claire’s production of being the perfect girlfriend has everyone fooled, except Jessie Boone, and she fears this tattooed bad boy will see her secret desire to explore his crude threats and promises to rock her perfect world. If she decides to give in to one uninhibited moment with Jessie, will she learn too late that it was all an act of vengeance or will Jessie learn the taste of first love is sweeter than that of revenge?
Review:
Cates' Going Under is my first YA indie novel, and I was very impressed. Immediately grabbing your attention with the sentimental, yet all too familiar story of Jessie Boone, the novel tugs at your heart strings and you are already rooting for the bad boy who secretly has a heart of gold. Jesse Boone was dealt a horrible hand of cards in the game of Life. After witnessing the heinous murder of his mother, Jesse had no other choice but to live with his drug-addict grandmother who forced him to sell drugs. However, Jesse was a talented football quarterback and surprisingly incredibly smart, and he was destined to have a good life----a life that he deserved. When the novel introduces Miss Perfect a.k.a Claire Deveraux, I was torn between hating her or loving her, for she is "the girl everyone loves to hate"-----beautiful, smart, and rich. However, as the story rolled on, I adored her.

Since I can't reveal some of my favorite scenes without spoiling the whole book, I will say I was floating on cloud 9 as I witnessed their "romance" unfold. Yet, I was on pins and needles, wandering if it was real or fake because they both had hidden agendas. Jesse wanted revenge on Forbes Henderson---the popular first string quarterback and Claire's boyfriend, who failed to "take him out"; and Claire wanted her own little revenge against Jesse.

I definitely wanted Jesse and Claire to be together, and I was praying that by the end of the story they would be---for the right reasons, of course!

I was also a fan of the playful, extremely corny mannerisms that Claire's best friend, Payton, brought to the book. I was a little embarrassed, but they definitely made me smile. Also, I enjoyed the little "in your face" moments when Claire was trying to seduce Jesse. They showed her sassy side---something Jesse was NOT expecting! I caught myself on many occasions saying "You Go Girl!!" in my head. But Jesse's still my man.

Along with the love and romance in this book, there were little twists and surprises that kept the pages turning. And I cannot not mention Jesse's little brothers---the sweetest kids in the world. I wanted to reach in the book and grab them and put them in my pocket. That sounds a little creepy, but I just love them. Georgia Cates gets two thumbs up from moi, and I especially appreciate the Official Going Under Playlist---It's so perfect for this novel. I can't wait to get my hands on Shallow.  So, I definitely recommend this book for YA romance lovers. READ THE BOOK! You have no other choice but to fall in love with it.
